Ajax, Pickering and Whitby: waterfront trails, planned new communities and the Lakeshore East GO line straight to Union.

I serve three lakeshore municipalities in Durham Region — Pickering, Ajax and Whitby — each on GO Transit’s Lakeshore East line with extensive Lake Ontario waterfront. Local information by town, then region-wide, each point sourced.

Pickering

  • Pickering GO Station is on the Lakeshore East line; the train to Union Station takes about 45 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes. Bay Ridges sits about a 5-minute walk away with waterfront shops and Beachfront Park, and Seaton is a large planned community taking shape in the north. [1][2][3]
  • Frenchman’s Bay is a coastal wetland designated an Environmentally Significant Area; the Waterfront Trail and the 4.7 km Monarch Trail loop the bay, and Petticoat Creek Conservation Park (TRCA) adds more shoreline green space. [4][5][6]

Ajax

  • Ajax GO Station (100 Westney Road South, opened 1988) is the Ajax hub for Durham Region Transit. [7]
  • Ajax has roughly six kilometres of Lake Ontario waterfront parkland along the William Parish Waterfront Trail; Veterans Point Gardens is dedicated to HMS Ajax — the town honours the ship’s crews in its street names. [8][9]
  • Greenwood Conservation Area (Duffins Creek), owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), offers an extensive trail network, and the Audley Recreation Centre adds a pool, courts and surrounding parkland. [10][11]

Whitby

  • Whitby GO Station is on the Lakeshore East line; a GO train to Union Station takes about an hour when making all stops. Whitby is served by Highways 401 and 407, linked by Highway 412. [12][13]
  • Brooklin is a community north of central Whitby; the waterfront includes Port Whitby and Iroquois Beach Park, with the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail running along the shore. [14][15][16]
  • Heber Down Conservation Area is owned and operated by the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA). [17]

Parks, trails & the waterfront

  • Durham’s three lakeshore towns share one long edge: Lake Ontario. The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail runs the whole way, stitching Pickering, Ajax and Whitby together along the water. [16]
  • In Pickering, the trail loops Frenchman’s Bay — a coastal wetland and Environmentally Significant Area — by way of the 4.7 km Monarch Trail, with Petticoat Creek Conservation Park (TRCA) adding shoreline green space to the west. [4][5][6]

Who Durham is best for

  • The Lakeshore East commuter — all three towns have their own GO station on the Lakeshore East line. Pickering to Union runs about 45 minutes, roughly every 30; Whitby is about an hour all-stops, and also sits where Highways 401 and 407 meet, linked by the 412. [1][2][12][13]
  • The waterfront-and-trails household — if a Saturday means the Waterfront Trail, Frenchman’s Bay or the Greenwood ravines, Durham puts that at the end of your street. [4][10][16]
  • The new-community buyer — Seaton in north Pickering and Brooklin in north Whitby are where Durham’s newer, planned housing is taking shape. [14][42]
  • The growth-minded buyer — between the Pickering City Centre downtown build-out and the Pickering Nuclear refurbishment, this is a corner of the GTA with a long investment horizon. [37][39]

Schools (region-wide)

  • Pickering, Ajax and Whitby are all served by the public Durham District School Board (DDSB, headquartered in Whitby) and the Catholic Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB); French-language boards Viamonde and MonAvenir also serve Durham. [18][19][20]
  • Post-secondary is anchored by Durham College (Oshawa and Whitby campuses — the Whitby campus hosts the OPG Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology — plus a Pickering learning site) and Ontario Tech University in Oshawa.   • Each town runs its own public library — Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. [21][22][23]
  • Recreation includes the Audley Recreation Centre (Ajax), the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex (Pickering), and the Whitby Civic Recreation Complex and Iroquois Park Sports Centre. [11][24]
  • Transit: Durham Region Transit (headquartered in Ajax) with regional rail via GO Transit’s Lakeshore East line. [25][26]
  • Pickering City Centre — the former Pickering Town Centre mall — is being redeveloped into a 55-acre master-planned downtown with multiple residential towers, an integrated City Hall and a central park beside Pickering GO; its retail is branded “The Shops at Pickering City Centre.” [36][37]
  • In Ajax, RioCan Durham Centre is a large open-air power centre at Kingston Road E and Salem Road. [38]

Growth & investment horizon

  • Two large projects anchor Durham’s outlook. Ontario has approved the $26.8-billion refurbishment of Pickering Nuclear (Units 5–8): provincial go-ahead came in November 2025, with a definition phase through 2026 and execution from early 2027 toward completion in the mid-2030s; the neighbouring Darlington refurbishment in Clarington completed in early 2026. Buying in Durham

  • Durham reads as three distinct towns, not one suburb. Pickering pairs an established waterfront (Bay Ridges, Beachfront Park) with a large planned north end at Seaton and a downtown being rebuilt from the Pickering Town Centre site into a master-planned Pickering City Centre. [3][37]
  • Ajax is the waterfront-park town — six kilometres of Lake Ontario parkland and a street grid that commemorates HMS Ajax. Whitby spans a historic downtown, the lakeside at Port Whitby, and the growing village of Brooklin to the north.   • Selling along the Lakeshore East corridor means leading with what buyers move here for: the GO commute, the waterfront trails, and — increasingly — the growth story (the Pickering City Centre downtown, the nuclear refurbishment, Seaton’s build-out). Hospitals & healthcare

  • Ajax Pickering Hospital (580 Harwood Ave S, Ajax) is operated by Lakeridge Health as a full-service community hospital. Whitby is also served by Lakeridge Health sites, with Lakeridge Health Oshawa the regional acute hub. [31][32]
