Schools in Markham: how York Region’s boards work
A plain-language explainer of the four school boards serving Markham and where Ontario’s official results come from — a how-it-works guide, not a league table.

For families, schools are often near the top of the home-search list — but the first thing worth understanding in Markham isn’t a ranking, it’s how the system is organised. Markham sits within York Region, and four publicly funded school boards serve the area. Knowing who runs what makes the rest of the process much easier.
Four boards serve Markham
Markham students are served by four publicly funded boards 123. English-language public schools fall under the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), and English-language Catholic schools under the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) 12. French-language families are served by the public Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Catholic Conseil scolaire MonAvenir, both of which operate across York Region 3. Which board a given school belongs to determines its catchment, its programs and how you register.
How school results are officially measured: EQAO
In Ontario, standardized student assessment is run by EQAO (the Education Quality and Accountability Office), the province’s official source for assessment results 4. If you want data on how students are doing, EQAO is the authoritative place to look — you can review results directly through EQAO rather than relying on second-hand summaries 4.
You’ll also see third-party “school rankings” published elsewhere. As a matter of editorial policy we don’t republish those rankings or individual school scores here. They compress a lot of context into a single number, and Ontario’s official results already live with EQAO. We’d rather point you to the primary source and help you ask better questions than hand you a league table.
Finding the right fit
School “fit” is rarely just about a number. Catchment boundaries, French immersion and specialty programs, before- and after-school care, and how a school’s schedule meshes with your commute all matter — and they vary school to school. The reliable way to sort it out is to confirm the specifics with the relevant board for the addresses you’re considering, rather than assuming.
- Identify which board(s) cover an address — public (YRDSB), Catholic (YCDSB), or the French-language boards (Viamonde, MonAvenir) 123.
- Confirm catchment boundaries and any program options (such as French immersion) directly with the board 123.
- Use EQAO for official, primary assessment results rather than third-party rankings 4.
- Weigh schools alongside the rest of daily life — commute, care, and the kind of neighbourhood you want around you.
If schools are a major factor in your move, Suba can help you keep the search organised — lining up board boundaries and program options against the neighbourhoods and commute that matter to your family.
How we write these guides: facts are checked against the published sources below. As a RECO-conscious editorial choice, we link to EQAO’s official results and do not republish third-party school rankings or individual school scores.
