Commuting from Durham to downtown Toronto: the Lakeshore East reality

Each of Durham's three lakeshore towns has its own GO stop on the Lakeshore East line — here's how that shapes a downtown working life.

Durham's three lakeshore towns share a single advantage that shapes daily life here: each has its own stop on GO Transit's Lakeshore East line. From Pickering GO, the train reaches Union in about 45 minutes and runs roughly every half hour through the day 12. Ajax GO — at 100 Westney Road South, open since 1988 — doubles as the town's Durham Region Transit hub, so the bus network feeds the platform 34. From Whitby GO, an all-stops train is closer to an hour, and drivers there have three highways meeting nearby: the 401, the 407, and the 412 that links them 56.

What that means in practice: you can live within sight of Lake Ontario, walk or bus to a GO platform, and still keep a downtown working life. The trade you're weighing isn't "commute or no commute" — it's which of the three towns puts your station, your price point and your weekends in the right order. That's the conversation Suba has with every Durham buyer.

How we write these guides: every fact is checked against the published sources listed below. We don’t publish forecasts or “good time to buy/sell” calls, and where numbers vary by route or day — like commute times — we point you to the official source rather than a rule of thumb.
