Wine country next door: a Belleville-base guide to Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County’s VQA wineries and the Sandbanks beaches are a short drive from Belleville — a day trip across the bay, not part of the city.

A note on geography: Prince Edward County and Sandbanks are nearby day trips from Belleville, across the Bay of Quinte — they are not part of the City of Belleville. We keep that distinction explicit throughout.

One of the real pleasures of living in Belleville is what’s a short drive away. Cross the Norris Whitney (Bay) Bridge on Highway 62 and you’re in Prince Edward County — “the County” to locals — a peninsula that has quietly become one of Ontario’s best-known wine regions. 12

The County: a VQA wine region

The County was designated a VQA wine appellation in 2007, and it’s home to roughly 40 wineries, with a reputation built especially on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 23 A weekend there has the unhurried feel of a place that grew into its tourism slowly: tasting rooms on back roads, farm tables, and the kind of scenery that makes the drive part of the outing.

And the beach: Sandbanks

The other reason people point their cars south is the beach. Sandbanks Provincial Park, about 30 minutes from Belleville, has one of the finest sand beaches in the province and the world’s largest baymouth barrier dune formation — a genuinely unusual landscape, and a reliable summer destination. 4

The point, for anyone considering Belleville as a home base, is that you don’t have to choose between a connected small city and easy access to one of Ontario’s most appealing day-trip regions. You get both — the city’s services and the corridor to the GTA on one side, the County’s wineries and beaches across the bay on the other. To see how a Belleville base puts the County within reach, the community hub maps the city itself, and Suba can talk through neighbourhoods and the realities of a move.

How we write these guides: every specific is checked against the published sources below. The descriptive characterizations of the County and Sandbanks are carried from those sources. We make no claims about property prices or returns, and nearby attractions are never described as being in Belleville.
